This cartoon about respect makes the point that people often don't understand how different others can be. The default assumption is that people think in similar ways to ourselves.
The truth is, humans (and cats) are incredibly complex. How they think and understand is based on experience, skills, and even the ability to focus. Our brains are structurally different, depending on what we have learned in the past, genetics, and even how we deal with emotions (or not).
Hence, the need for mutual respect, and good communication. We need it to understand others, and how to get along with them. If we don't respect others by default (whether we understand them or not), we may never get to know them enough to truly "get" them, or to have them get us in return.
Almost every conflict that ever was is based on misunderstandings (if it's not something nefarious like pure greed), so it's worth asking people whether and how they feel misunderstood. You might be very surprised by the answer.
